Latest county public record scrape

It's not surprising a UWF Advanced Newspaper Reporting class couldn't get Escambia County to comply with a simple public records request during a survey of seven agencies recently. The IN endures all kind of road blocks, obstacles and shennanigans. County officials were sending our requests to IN board members. The latest is the county refusing to give up County Commission Chairman Mike Whitehead's e-mails, unless we give them a subject matter. They also want to black out info contained in certain e-mails. Both are blatant violations of Florida's Sunshine Laws. Makes you wonder what they have to hide, doesn't it?

When will they stop breaking the law? The records are ours, not theirs

"Although a telephone inquiry as to status of a records request is both permitted and desirable, citing the mandatory attorneys' fees provisions of Fla. Stats. sec. 119.12 (1995) is often the most effective method of encouraging a prompt response to a request." http://www.rcfp.org/cgi-local/tapping/index.cgi?key=FL108

As some one who has been 'fighting' with the SRIA over public records for almost a year, I can only wish everyone luck, and don't give up the fight. File a lawsuit against them for non-compliance.
